The Tower and the Bridge by Billington. It's not really about construction, but it poses an interesting idea about how structure can be art.

Can't remember the book's name but the course. It was a practical structures course with an afternoon session for computing. Prof didn't take time to know anyone (he was beyond retirement age) so I had a friend yell "Here' when role was called. I was out hunting squirrels.
