Hi All,
In metrology, we are working on small plastic parts, and sometimes it needs cutting to reach the wanted dimension, right now we are using a cutting disc, it's dangerous and it may deform the parts, is there any advanced tools, that can guaranty the security, and preserve parts from deformation.

How often is "sometimes?" I have issue with metrology doing rework for production, in addition to the simple fact that yield should be designed-in, not reworked in. If the manufacturing tolerances are bad, the design should accommodate that, or find new manufacturing process.

The dimension is there for a functional reason (I hope) therefore create a rig that measures that function rather than trying to measure something directly.

For example suppose you had an oil lubrication channel in a casting. You could cut castings open and measure the dimension of the channel. or you could put a certain flow rate of fluid through it and measure the pressure loss.

I have on occasion had to cut open (and destroy) assemblies in order to verify what was potted in, or even just to verify a dimension that no gage could reach.

I found that an ordinary hand hacksaw, fitted with a Grit-Edge blade, can do a nice job of basically making a metallurgical section. Fine grit round section blades can even section a potted optical assembly right through the lens.
