Heat Treatment of 3½ Nickel Casting ~ ASTM A352-LC3
Heat Treatment of 3½ Nickel Casting ~ ASTM A352-LC3
(OP)
The large casting (size and shape of a standard dumpster) heavy section (2~3") undergoes soaking at 1635°F, followed by quenching 'to below 300°C (572°F)'. ASTM A352 offers zero specific instructions for any of the grades it describes.
My experience with welding of ferritic steels with substantial amounts of nickel alloy tells me that 300°C may be insufficiently low to ensure complete martensite transformation.
Anyone have better knowledge or actual experience with this alloy steel? Thanks in advance!

'comfortably touch' means < 60°C
both of which are a lot lower than 300°C
Thanks Bob!
