I have a qualified procedure as per ASME Sec IX in 1G position.

Can I have a WPQ qualified in 2G for this procedure

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

hi

1G position can not support 2G so.you have to run new WPQT.

Reza

Do you mean i should run a new welding procedure

I am sorry but yes!!!!!!!!

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

Addition of position is a nonessential variable as per QW 405.1 for most processes. Change in position is a suypplementary essential variable for most processes as per QW 405.2, but even there it is the change from any welding positioon to the vertical uphill position(Because of lowest travel speeds, the heat input is bound to be maximum for the vertical uphill position and thus impact properties lowest...so if you qualify PQR on 3G , it qualifies WPS for all positions for supplementary essential requirements) .

In your case even if you have qualified on 1G with or without impact testing on PQR, it would surely qualify for 2G position as per ASME Section IX. So you should be able to qualify a welder in 2G position.

As an afterthought, please note that 1G, 2G, 3G.... are only test positions and as you have correctly mentioned should be used for PQR and WPQ. But flat, vertical, horizontal and overhead are the correct terminolgies to be used for qualified positions on a WPS (Refer QW 461).

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

Mr. Prasad is correct.  Even though this question is in the AWS forum, the question is about ASME IX, which allows welding procedures qualified in the 1G position to be used in all positions unless suplementary essential variables apply.

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

  HI

 1) AS PER ASME SECTION IX

 A) FOR PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD (PQR), POSITION  IS NOT A ESSENTIAL VARIABLE EXCEPT FOR IMPACT AND OVERLAY. IF YOU HAVE QUALIFIED YOUR PQR IN FLAT POSITION (EXCEPT SAW), THIS QUALIFIES FOR ALL POSITION

 2) FOR WELDERS PERFORMANCE QULIFICATION (WPQ), POSITION IS A ESSENTIAL VARIABLE. IF YOU QUALIFY IN FLAT (1G) POSITION , HE IS NOT QUALIFIED FOR ALL POSITIN, ONLY 6G POSITION CAN QUALIFY ALL POSITION

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

This string is 1 yr old but hopefully everyone is still out there and alive.

I have a Welder who qualified on plate in the 2G position on plate.  I would believe this qualifies him in the 1G but does this qualify him in the 3G???

A similar question, if a welder qualifies in 3G on plate, does he qualify in the 2G???

RE: WPQ as per Sec IX

I believe your questions are based on ASME Section IX.

I have a Welder who qualified on plate in the 2G position on plate.  I would believe this qualifies him in the 1G but does this qualify him in the 3G???
***Welder test in 2G qualifies for F,H (F=Flat, H=Horizontal)-For groove/fillet in plate/pipe.

A similar question, if a welder qualifies in 3G on plate, does he qualify in the 2G???
***Welder test in 3G qualifies for F,V (F=Flat, V=Vertical. Does not qualify him for Horizontal)-For groove/fillet in plate/pipe.

Thanks and regards

If it moves, train it...if it doesn't move, calibrate it...if it isn't written down, it never happened!
