I have a piston/cylinder design where the piston shears a thin plate of metal. The peak pressure occurs in approx. 1 ms. Once the metal is sheared the volume of the cylinder increases. A safety factor is required to ensure the bar is sheared so the pressure used is more than what is required to actually shear the plate. My question is: would the pressure in the cylinder only reach the pressure required to shear the plate (then decrease due to increase in volume) or would the pressure rise to the peak pressure? I am attempting to perform FEA on the cylinder (housing) which houses the piston and the metal plate and was not sure what force to apply to the housing (force required to shear plate or force acting on piston due to peak pressure).
