Angled Diaphragm Chord/Collector/Shearwall Analysis

Angled Diaphragm Chord/Collector/Shearwall Analysis

Angled Diaphragm Chord/Collector/Shearwall Analysis

(OP)
Hello All,

I'm designing an indoor mezzanine w/ pretty light seismic loads in SDC B. I'm curious how people analyze diaphragms where the shearwalls are angled w/ respect to the chords. I know that ASCE references it as an irregularity but I've never seen an explanation of the actual physics behind how the diaphragm itself works, and how you account for the jogs in your chords. I've attached a markup of the framing plan for reference.

Thanks,

ZRC

What are we talking here? Topped precast plank deck? Precast concrete wall panel shear walls just at the exterior?

HELP! I'd like your help with a thread that I was forced to move to the business issues section where it will surely be seen by next to nobody that matters to me: http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=456235

I have a couple of generic resources:

KootK,

Thanks for responding. It is 3/4" plywood over TJI's with wood shearwalls on all sides. It's being built inside of a pre engineered metal building so all we are really dealing with is Seismic in a low seismic zone.

RE: Angled Diaphragm Chord/Collector/Shearwall Analysis

In terms of by the book mechanics, those references will likely be more helpful than what I'll describe now. This is how I'd probably do it were it me getting it done, with one exception. At this scale, I wouldn't even bother looking at chords & drag struts in detail. Stuff will sort itself out at the ends.

KootK,

Thanks so much for taking the time to mark up those examples. It helps a lot to discuss and find some outside opinions.

I need to go through those longer pdfs over the weekend to get a better feel for it but I have a much better idea of the mechanics now.
