Oxide Build-up with Nickel Alloy Welding

A question for those who have done gas shielded welding with high nickel alloys such as Inco 82.
The specific situation we have is seal welding between Inconel 600 tube sheet and 5/8"Ø Incoloy 800 tubes. The fillet weld is made in two passes. The welds are very good but dye penetrant chemicals are having difficulty covering the surface properly, suggesting there is oxide present.

What are your experiences with oxide build-up, and has trailing gas been effective in preventing it?

The oxide is very tenacious. Wire brushing is not aggressive enough to remove the oxide between weld beads. We used carbide burrs to remove the oxide.
For the purpose of performing PT you might consider a fine grit sand paper to remove the oxide before performing the test.

Having welded Inco 82 resistor bands I can concur that the oxide is very tenacious, you really have to gas shield everything with purge gas or gas fed back up bars , and yes trailing gas helps at least until the surface has cooled below oxidation temp , and clean remaining oxides off with carbide burrs before welding again, changing them often because as soon as they start to get dull, they just mug the surface instead of removing the oxide film .

gtaw is'spot on' concerning Inconel oxides and their removal. Do not grind as this just smears the oxide into base metal.
