Amusement ride snaps, India

Amusement ride snaps, India

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

I'd say 'not amusing'...
I tried to see the video but got "geo location blocking" so I fired up my VPN service and hit it from Sweden. Same problem.

So I switched to a VPN server in my service located in India!

At which point Chrome ratted me out.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

It's an Australian website.

The main pylon clearly fails at point of fixity with the central hub. Fatigue and corrosion.

I've never liked the look of those pendulum rides.

(OP)
That one did look very spindly given it had a counter weight.

There are similar ones without a counterweight, which presumably isn't nearly so taxing on the arm that holds the riders.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

This works https://www.newsflare.com/video/303991/crime-accid...

Looks to be a fairly brutal change of section from the axle to the main shaft. Stress concentration point for sure.

Most of the one's I've seen don't have counterweights, but presumably this reduces the structural loads on the main A frame supports.

Oh! Thanks for that info Little. Explains my difficulties.

That was such a... well behaved failure. It's fortunate it didn't fall off landing on an edge or it would've created a bunch more carnage.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

Also has parallels with that decapitation incident in the US where it suddenly becomes clear that no one other than the owners and operators are required to self certify the rides. No problem there then....

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

When stepping through the frames at about 7.0s it looks like the steel plate is tearing just above the connection.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

I met a mechanical engineer once who had written the first guidelines in Australia for checking these rides. Possibly they became a national standard - not sure. The guidelines were done in a hurry after some incident and were based on instinct mostly. Completely unregulated and somehow escaping WHS notice. Probably just too hard as many travel constantly to fairs and are cash businesses.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

I think I did an OK...Link

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

Articles keep saying a cable broke. I don't see any cables on the ride before/during failure but there could be a cable lying on the ground in the after failure shots. Were there cables helping to support it?

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

I think the cable thing is a red herring. the ride is clearly working normally gradually speeding up then simply broke.

It looks like the shaft was bolted onto the main cetral point, but seems to have broken above the flanged joint if you look at the two photos below, the break point seems to be well above the colourful collar.

the "reinforcement" of the flanged joint looks rather odd to me - I wonder if there was some previous damage or the designer recognized that the joint was under a lot of moment.

Reasonable hi res image before the accident

The break point in lower res video still

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

Lots of stress reversal and fatigue potential on that joint and repetitive acceleration changes. Would the loads be similar to an impact load of some factor (2x, 3x?) gravity?

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

The break appears to be on the red line (below the flanges), not at yellow (which would suggest bolt failure).

(OP)
Yes. Looks like the stiffened bulb remained intact, and it failed just beyond that. Makes sense. Sudden change of shape, with lots of potential stress concentrations and fatigue points.

RE: Amusement ride snaps, India

Where do those higher res photos come from?

Edit:

From the story:

Quote:

Ahmedabad mayor Bijal Patel told local media 27 people are being treated in hospital for injuries.

He also said an inquiry into the incident has been ordered so the reason for the crash can be determined.

The inquiry will reportedly probe whether Kankaria Adventure Park had the correct licence to operate the ride.

Different country. Same sad story. Something as serious as this being regulated by low level officials and talk about probes and licenses.
