Mag Drive Pumps

Mag Drive Pumps

Mag Drive Pumps

(OP)
Hi, I want to know about Mag Drive pumps

- I am told solid contents are not desirable in services, is there a limit ( average and approx)
- what are the limitations of Mag Drive pumps
- Any Reliability figures available
- What is the critical most failure component within Mag Drive pumps

Thanks a lot !

RE: Mag Drive Pumps

If it is one with a bearing in the working fluid than the debris tolerance will depend on the bearing materials.
In most cases this is none. Usually any debris will be a disaster.
The biggest killer of these is over heating.
The working fluid is what cools them.
Overloading them and slipping the drive generates a lot of heat, and there is then no flow to remove it.

What are you wanting to pump?
Why have you chosen a mag drive?
They are great for specific applications but they are expensive.

Ed, Thanks a lot
Bitumen is the service , high temperature , 140 Deg C Mechanical seals are not available hence mag Drive

RE: Mag Drive Pumps

IDEX Viking positive displacement pumps have been pumping Bitumen with a variety of seals for decades.

You may require a steam quench for the seal....

IMHO, this would be a better choice than your Mag Drive idea...

Thank you MJ!

RE: Mag Drive Pumps

Hot, viscus, potentially abrasive, are all reasons to NOT use mag drive.
Yes, these require special seal arrangements.

RE: Mag Drive Pumps

We used Viking helical gear pumps in 140-170degC operating temp range bitumen service, with Plan 52 John Crane seals with fin fan cooler and recirc pump in the barrier fluid circuit to handle a wide turndown (down to less than 10:1 on speed). The VFD motor had an aux cooling fan to keep the motor windings cool at low speed operation. Pump casing was Thermon HPT style electric heat traced and insulated. Getting the seal system requirements firmed up took months.
Would have thought mag drive pumps would not even figure in the selection options list for this application.

Thanks a lot George. That's a useful input
