Multi cylinder air compressor output(s) to tank

Imagine a multi cylinder air compressor - lets say inline 4 as example - bores same diameter, single stage pumping, 90deg journal offsets.
On my Ingersoll Rand inline twin cylinder compressor single stage the journal offset is 180degs - both cylinders output into a single Y pipe that goes to non return valve and into tank.
On the inline 4 mentioned initially, would this still be ok - or would the volume of the output collector pipework be too much - should they each have their own tank entry non return.
Thoughts?

Any pumping device for air to a compressor tank must have the necessary arrangement of checkvalves to supply at a pressure lower than the tanks working pressure to the tank, but also block pressure higher than the pressure in the air supply pipeline at any time to return and disturb the pumping.
Thus it is more a question of correct pipeline layout and placement of checkvalves. Extra checkvalves seems in this case to be necessary. Note that the supply from several sources to a single line must be time balanced in such a way that all sources supply equally.

It was really an issue of layout and packaging, not flow.
