Difference between Thermoplastic and CFRP

Difference between Thermoplastic and CFRP

Difference between Thermoplastic and CFRP

(OP)
Hi,

Can someone help me understand the difference between a thermoplastic and CFRP? Which of these, is a better material for aircrafts?
What could be the possible/practical challenge in certifying (under 14 CFR part 25) thermoplastic as a primary structure? Also difficulties related to repairs and maintainability.

RE: Difference between Thermoplastic and CFRP

You must mean thermoplastic CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) as compared to thermoset CFRP. They are both used in primary structures but thermoset use is far more mature. Thermoplastics are potentially tougher than thermosets but economic manufacturing methods still need development.

Thermoplastic that is not fiber reinforced has only a tiny fraction of the strength and stiffness of carbon fiber.

RE: Difference between Thermoplastic and CFRP

Please define what you mean by "better".

Suggest you go do some research on compositesworld.com. Lots of good articles there.

And "aircraft" is plural. "Aircrafts" is not a proper word.

Compositepro..

Thanks for the explanation. Can you also comment on the repairability of both types of plastic?
Which of these could be easily repaired using standard techniques like lay-up or bonded repairs.

In the May edition of Composites World there is a discussion of Thermoplastic CFRP versus Thermoset CFRP on page 12. This may answer some of your questions and help you find what you are looking for.
