I am Italian, so forgive me :
I don't understand the difference (if there is one) between linear and lineal. For example a uniform load (kN/m or lbs/ft) is linear or lineal ?
Thanks

RE: linear lineal

Linear.

Linear is about being in a straight line. Linear actuators, linear equations, linear accelerators.....

Lineal can be used to mean the same thing, but is more commonly used to talk about family relationships (so I have a lineal connection to my my great-great-grandmother meaning that she is a direct ancestor and I am a direct descendant).

RE: linear lineal

I use lineal for measurements such as "ten leneal feet of lumber."

If you are offended by the things I say, imagine the stuff I hold back.

RE: linear lineal

lin·e·al
adjective

1.
in a direct line of descent or ancestry.
"a lineal descendant"
2.

RE: linear lineal

Are there non-lineal descendants?
With Google I could not find any clear distinction between the two terms. I often use areal as the adjective form of area, such as the areal weight of a sheet of material. Lineal is the adjective form of line but then there is also linear. Linear often is used to imply a straight line. I would use lineal where there is a line relationship, but the line does not have to be straight. Such as the lineal feet of fabric on a roll. However, I find counter-examples on the internet. The two terms are often defined as synonyms so I don't think that you can be called wrong by not making any distinction. I guess you can just use the term that rhymes best in your poem.

RE: linear lineal

The linear induction motor spans 15 lineal feet...

Are there non-lineal descendants?

I have a much loved relative whom we simply know as "Sylvie". Describing her as my step-great-grandmother-out-law seems a bit impersonal. Perhaps I'm not a true descendant - but if I am, it's certainly far from lineal.

RE: linear lineal

"Are there non-lineal descendants?" perhaps second, third, fourth, fifth...cousins

RE: linear lineal

Okay, I googled it. The alternative to lineal descendant is:

"A collateral descendant is a legal term for a relative descended from a brother or sister of an ancestor, and thus a niece, nephew, or cousin."

RE: linear lineal

Two completely different and non-interchageable words.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)
