Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

I’m hoping I might get a poll from folks on this forum on the idea of Parasolid exports containing assembly structure. Siemens really only measures NX needs/wants based on IR generation, so the wants of NX users is probably not effectively captured if only IR’s are looked at.

Currently NX is the only major CAD tool that does not provide Parasolid exports with an assembly structure (flat file formats only).
Creo, Solidworks, CATIA, SpaceClaim, and even Siemen’s SolidEdge all provide Parasolid export with the option to include the assembly structure.

Who here would like to have NX also provide this Parasolid functionality (Parasolid with Assembly structure)?

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

I had to try this to remember the details.
NX does export Parasolids with structure. Always.

But, it is depending on how you import a parasolids into NX if you get structure or not.
If you go File import- Parasolids. No Structure.
If you go File -open, type Parasolids, you get full structure.

Also, File- Import Parasolids produces "dumb bodies",
whilst File open , file type parasolids , will produce "smart bodies" that can be updated if a new parasolids file is placed in the same directory.

The same principle applies to JT files. ( can be imported via File-import-part)

Case closed ?

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

NX can import a Parasolid with an assembly structure that was exported by some other software that generated it.

What NX cannot do is EXPORT a Native NX or any model as a Parasolid with an Assembly structure included.
It can only Export a Parasolid as a flat file containing multiple bodies.

So the question is does anyone else what NX to have this export ability since every other major CAD tool can?

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Quote (Toost)

NX does export Parasolids with structure. Always.

IIRC, it doesn't save a nested structure; all of the components essentially become top level assembly components (it flattens the structure to 1 level deep).

To answer the poll question: I rarely have the need to share an entire assembly with someone (importing or exporting). I can see how it would be useful, but at my current position, it isn't missed.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

While you are at it, NX doesn't support exporting Wireframe and points via Parasolid, but it will import wireframe and points from Visi's Parasolid export...

If I'm exporting an ASM, I have to use STEP or IGS to carry along my supporting curves and points.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

That would definitely be a nice addition as well. I tried Solidworks and it also exports curves via Parasolid and NX reads those in as well.
Sad how limited NX is with exporting a Parasolid when it is supposedly Parasolid based and the company who produces NX is the Parasolid license holder.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Reverting. i missed the one level thing that Cowski notes. ( the tried assy is only single level...)
Next attempt: Can you use JT instead ?
( what is the target system / Intended purpose for the export? )

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Unfortunately, I can't use JT. The suppliers/customers I'm dealing with request Parasolid.
Two use Creo 2 & 3 and choose not to purchase the JT license from PTC. And the last uses NX 8.5 and only wants Parasolid.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Ok, i see.
JT files contain Parasolid data as far as i understand it. ( if one ticks the "include precise data" )
and wireframe , assy structure and PMI.
- Should work fine for your NX8.5 supplier.

I am writing an ER to have Facet bodies imported via JT into to Convergent Bodies.
this option exists when importing DWG files in NX12.

Yes, i can add to your ER.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Yeah I wish I could convince the NX 8.5 folks, but they are set in their ways, as shown by them still using NX 8.5. LOL

That's interesting I was just playing around with convergent bodies on JT's that, I guess, didn't have precise data turned on.
I was converting them into convergent bodies manually (Menu, Edit, Facet Body, Convert) to use them to cut away some things in another model for a clearance verification.
So basically you'd want an option to have the convergent bodies generated when the JT is imported if the precise body wasn't provided by the JT?

Thank you for applying another ER to the stack :)
If you need some existing numbers to give to GTAC related to this request, we have 6419427 and 5174346, which are extremely old but still "active."

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

"So basically you'd want an option to have the convergent bodies generated when the JT is imported if the precise body wasn't provided by the JT?"
- since the only type of faceted body that NX can handle in drawing views are the convergent type.
The hidden line calculations doesn't bother for other types of facet data.

The manual convert (Menu, Edit, Facet Body, Convert) would be an extra step to do, and , it requires a expensive extra license.

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

You can make all the polls you want here but nothing will change. Submit and ER and post the er #
I would suggest taking this conversation to

RE: Parasolid NX Assembly Structure Export (Poll)

Yup that would be mine glasses

I've done all of the above, but Siemens states even though there are several ER's for this they have absolutely no plans to ever provide this.
I have ER's, posted on EngTips, posted on the Siemens forum community, and NX forum on LinkedIn.

I'm trying to see if there's any community interest beyond the Siemens GTAC/IR system given all the other CAD tools provide this functionality.
At this moment the current number of ER's (unknown how many it would take) does not entice Siemens to spend the time to make this happen.

At the current response rate to my posts I guess it shows we have very little interest, which means I have no push to throw back at Siemens.
