For the design of nuts, is it sufficient to check if the thread engagement length is sufficient to transfer the force in the bolt? Are there any additional checks which are required as per AISC?
And I am not sure on what basis the decision is made to go for a hex nut or a heavy hex nut? Could anyone shed some light on this?

Generally bolts in AISC are going to be either A325 or A490 (now known as ASTM F3125 Grade A325 or Grade A490). These bolts are only available in a heavy hex head. Nuts should be of a similar size, i.e., heavy hex nut. The larger head and nut are necessary to insure the ability to properly pretension the bolt in a structural connection. The only check for thread engagement length is to insure that the bolt is long enough so that the threaded end is at least flush with the outer surface of the nut. A few extra threads won't hurt anything but are not mandatory. For a structural connection, having the end of the bolt recessed inside the nut is not acceptable.
