Does anyone know of a U.S. University that may be involved in research into testing of pressure vessels subject to external pressure. Also of interest would be any university academic work to help clarify "design by analysis" rules?

Any insight would be appreciated.

To restate the question differently,
1. Is there a U.S. University doing research on analysis and testing of externally loaded pressure vessels?
2. Is there a university that's doing research into improvements/clarifications to the ASME Design by Analysis rules?

Not really. There are some international ones for 1).

What improvements to the DBA rules are you looking for. What questions are you looking to have answered by universities? Why universities? Why not businesses or non-university associated professionals?

TGS4- Agreed on 1): It does seem that Canada, UK, China and India seem to have universities doing some research right now.
I'm interested in research on DBA considering the change from stress categorization in ASME BPVC Sec VIII Div. 2 (or British PD-5500 code) toward something more like the european code EM 13445-3 DBA "Direct Approach". I have to admit that I come from a different industry and am trying to get myself familiar with the codes and processes.

There seems to be lots of discussion and controversy (many long forum discussions and many papers written) on applying "stress categorization" now that folks are using more detailed FEM 3-D models, which are now highlighting stresses at local surface stress concentrations and stress at discontinuities with resolution that wasn't available when the stress category techniques were developed.

We have a research project that is not in the pressure vessel industry but is very closely related to these issues. So we're looking for partners to work toward a straightforward approach to setting guidelines for detailed FEM analysis of complex parts. In my industry I'm more familiar with research being carried out by universities to move forward research, but I'm getting the feeling that the pressure vessel industry is more closely tied to industry partners (a good thing, in my opinion); Most of the chairmen of ASME BPVC committees seem to have active industry jobs rather than college professorships.

When ASME wants to research making changes to their code to they contract with private companies to get that work accomplished?

aerobob, please contact me offline - click on my username and email to me at the address contained therein. I am involved in not only the ASME Codes (specifically the DBA aspects), but also the ASME PVP organization that features research in this field - including in non-pressure vessels (such as aerospace, subsea, etc). If you are going to be doing research in this field, you absolutely need to be attending and presenting at the PVP Conference.
