Rockfill dam in sea shore

Rockfill dam in sea shore

Rockfill dam in sea shore

What are the necessary tests for rockfill with large boulders for sea shore ? i am guessing UCS , micro deval and Los Angeles tests as well as dry density perhaps ?

RE: Rockfill dam in sea shore

recommend a quarry inspection and approve the quarry before manufacturing any rock for the project

stockpile approval (evaluate size, weight, shape, specific gravity) at the quarry and check size again after transportation to the site to check for breakdown in transit

Soundness: check for absorption and run chemical soundness tests as well as wetting-drying test
freeze - thaw test might be necessary depending on your climate

For testing and QA / QC, recommend the following reference which covers the subject well:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

this is available on-line

thank you so much

RE: Rockfill dam in sea shore

I just looked at our (VDOT) specs for riprap. We'd require T113 (coal and lignite, deleterious materials), T112 (clay lumps, deleterious materials), T96 (LAA), T103 and T104 (soundness, magnesium and freeze-thaw).

We have criteria for each of these tests and the rock will comply with these criteria, or be rejected. We'd also do a mine/quarry/pit inspection as there are criteria for the pit too.

Our road and bridge specs are on the internet.
