431 stainless ASTM A276

431 stainless ASTM A276

Anyone has an idea why ASTM A276 "Standard specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes" doesnot include the mechanical requirements for 420, 431, and 440, while all other grades, including 403, 410 martenstic grades list the strength requirements (refer to Table 2)? Thanks!

RE: 431 stainless ASTM A276

Ben, did you look on the next page at the continuation of the table 2?

RE: 431 stainless ASTM A276

Ed, yes this is a long table, which lists tens of grades including austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic, and martensitic grades, but only part of martensitic grades, 420,431, 440 do not include tension property requirements (tensile, yield, elongation)?!

RE: 431 stainless ASTM A276

Then the only requirement is a hardness, there is no strength required.
Some of these alloys have nil ductility, so that might be the issue.

Send an Inquiry into ASTM committee responsible for this specification. They will get back to you with the best response.
