I am performing a code analysis on a shop made "vessel". It is basically a piece of 3" Sch 10 SS pipe with two 5" x 7" rectangular flat heads welded on each end. Two 1/4" AN910 couplings are attached to each head for nozzles.

The head joint configuration matches UW-13.2(e-1). My question is, for determining the required flat head thickness per UG-34 and opening reinforcement per UG-39, would just use the diameter of the portion of the flat plate that connects to the shell (outside diameter of the pipe) or would use the equations that account for the long and short spans of the rectangular head even though the entire head is not under internal pressure?

cmsurfsup, I'd ignore that fact that the head is non-circular, and calculate its thickness and opening reinforcement per UG-34, Fig (h).

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

I confirm: unless the head is not at a right angle to the pipe CL, the head has to be calculated as a standard circular one.
