Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

(OP)
Hi all,

This may be a long shot, but I am looking for a copy of the old Hawker Siddeley Aviation design handbook (all volumes) as well as the SOR documents. I have managed to find bits and pieces, but it would be nice if someone had a full copy of these documents. Any help is appreciated.

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

724 napier... good luck...

Anyone...

I'm also having a devil-of-a-time finding a copy of the USAF 'HIAD' - Handbook of Instructions for Aircraft Designers [predecessor to Air Force Systems Command Design Handbooks AFSC DHs]. Several librarians are looking for it as I type... but sound discouraged.

Regards, Wil Taylor

Wil,

I think you're right :P in that I will never find them.

I managed to find SOR51, but I cannot find anything else. Surely they must exist somewhere.

Just looking around it looks like there is more than one volume of the USAF 'HIAD'. Does that sound correct? I will check with my librarian to see if she can get it and scan it.

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

724Napier...

DANG... I was just told our company HISTORIAN has a complete HIAD in the Historical archives. Odd place for a document like that. They will get it scanned and sent... but will take time. I was hoping they would file a virtual [*.pdf] copy in the library.

I work on antiques... unfortunately the amount of data/reports lost ['missing'] is mind blowing.

I can only imagine how hard it will be to find Hawker-Siddeley data. What happened to the company: dissolved? Sold-out to another? Perhaps a corporate historian can find the HS-DH.

Hawker Siddeley became part of British Aerospace

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

Wil and rb1957,

I came across this website http://www.baesystems.com/en-uk/heritage/hawker-si....

Apparently, it looks like they are now part of BAE Systems. I contacted them via email, this was their response:

"All predecessor company documentation is held and coveted by our various Heritage Groups within the company and so I am afraid we are unable to help you on this occasion."

It is unfortunate that they will not release any of those documents given they are all seventy plus years old. I have worked with BAE in the past and they are notoriously hard to get information from. Wil you are right that it is mind blowing with how much data and reports have been lost over the year.

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

not surprised they wouldn't give you a copy ... proprietary data.

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

724Napier... Sounds like You are SOL.

I was able to 'acquire' stress/design hdbks from engrs who worked at multiple old heritage US companies. It seems that walking away with these books was not 'legal'... but was not uncommon during the chaos of mass layoffs.

I can only imagine there are copies of the HD hdbks in the hands of elderly engineers who might never let them go.

Hopefully my company's historian will come thru for me. Waiting game [a busy guy]. The historian is pretty tight lipped.

There is another fella in our company with an almost identical name [to the historian, middle initial is different]. He gets email meant for the historian all the time [yeah, I unintentionally sent him an email, too]. We had a discussion regarding the content he'd seen over the years... fascinating!

Happy Columbus Day...

I have e-copies of the Boeing, McDonnell, Douglas, Lockheed, etcetera stress analysis manuals on a disk.
These documents are properties of the different companies. I will not provide same if requested since I
have no desire to be locked up with Crooked Hillary.

GrandpaDave,

Happy Columbus Day to you as well.

It's funny how some of these manuals can be considered propriety when the majority of them just copy each other. It's just a little ironic when they all have the same mistakes :) By no means do we want anyone posting propriety information.

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

GrandpaDave...

I too use company confidential data and take it VERY seriously.

Can't help myself... fingers moving on-their-own...

Too bad we can't get our hands on that wraskley Edward Snowden. Perhaps Trump could put in a good strong word with Putin!

RE: Hawker Siddeley design handbook and SOR

A company I worked for for a long time decided that documentation could be used to prove they weren't following the documentation, so they had a big QA led bonfire and celebrate an end to detailed specs in favor of 'using proper design techniques.' et al.

Then they could not understand why there was no consistency from the new engineers reporting to the new program managers.

They also got rid of an extensive engineering library; I think they took it as a tax write-off rather than letting engineers pick it apart.

I really hate MBAs in engineering management.
