I'm looking for the basic principals of operation of a petroleum submerge pump.

You have asked a very complex question looking for a very simple solution!  

First you need to understand that "Oilfield" type sub-pump manufactures are a little different than most centrifugal pump manufactures in that we like for you to supply basic well data and we will do the designs for you.  Oil wells can very from stripper wells that have < 1% oil cut up to 100% oil cut.  Multi-phase flows in pumps require considerably more research than a simple 1% straight line draw down for a water well type application would.  Depletion type wells require more consideration than a water drive formation etc.....

Most sub-pump manufactures offer "Well Test" rental equipment at a fixed 30 day rate that will provide you an acurate IPR curve for a given reservoir at various flows, lift and BHP.  

Most manufactures are more than willing to do the "lunch and learn" thing for a company to help understand the principals of artificial lift, but the best artificial lift method may involve something as simple as a velocity string up to a "staged" complex sub-pumps involving multi-phase flow, viscous fluids and VSD's.  

I work for Schlumberger and would like to think that I consider all possible forms of artificial lift before recommending any type of lift method for my customers.  I have both offered and given my customers any training that they may request or require.
