Cooling Tower Design in Oman

Cooling Tower Design in Oman

Cooling Tower Design in Oman

Hello Experts,

We have the attached Cooling Tower data sheet for one of our projects in Oman.

I need only to know whether this design will work in our highly humid (100% Relative Humidity) and Very hot (50 Celsius Degree ambient temperature) climate.

I am just afraid that the design is not good enough for that.

I appreciate your feedback,

Thank you in advance,

At a glance, no. It was not designed for your location.
Contact the manufacturer, give him accurate historical climatic data, and let him size a unit for you.
Warning, it will be big.

First, consider moving this thread to the HVAC/R forum, you are more likely to get more response in that forum.

Second, 100% RH? I sure hope it can operate when it rains.

Third, you need more information about the tower. For the performance data given, what are the ambient conditions? Are there any performance correction factors for different ambient conditions, if so what are they? These are thing the manufacturer needs to provide you.

Fourth, after establishing the tower's performance at design ambient, does the tower's performance meet your system's needs? If the answer to this is "yes" you are good to go, if not, you need to get a different tower.

Glancing at the performance section, I concur with EdStainless. I also doubt that you'll find a manufacturer capable of supplying a cooling tower meeting your environmental conditions stated.

Another thought about my response. From the data about the stated environmental condition, there will be no latent heat transfer however there will be sensible heat transfer and that heat transfer can go either way depending how hot or how cold the water to be cooled is in relation to the ambient air.

RE: Cooling Tower Design in Oman

The design case ambient conditions stated on the cooling tower PDS is 60% RH at a wet bulb temp of 32degC - typically 50degC does not simultaneously correspond to 100% RH, so what oyu say now cannot be a design case for the CT.

RE: Cooling Tower Design in Oman

Chiller condensers are designed for 85F (29.44C) entering condenser water temperature and 95F (35.0C) leaving condenser water
temperature. Cooling towers are typically design to cool the condenser water to 85F (29.44C) at maximum 78F (25.56C) wet bulb temperature. Oman's ambient wet bulb temperature goes up to 91.94F (33.3C). Wet bulb to typically above 78F (25.6C) on the months of March to October. I have not seen rating of water cooled chiller with entering condenser water temperature higher than 85F (29.44C). Therefore I don't think water cooled chillers will work in Oman. I don't think cooling the condenser water by geothermal would work either because the ground temperature in Oman would be greater than 60F (15.56C). It would probably be more like 85F (29.44C). You should look into chillers with air cooled condenser. They have ratings up to 130F (54.44C) outdoor dry bulb temperature. Extreme outdoor dry bulb temperature for Oman is 115F (46.1C).
Don't get hung up on water cooled. There are considerable expense and maintenance required with cooling towers and associated water treatment that would offset the lesser electricity requirement of water cooled chillers. How does the cost of water and water treatment compare with electricity. How good is labor - cooling tower maintenance in Oman? I did a project for a large outpatient hospital starting out with water cooled chiller but the owner insisted on air cooled because they did not want to deal with the maintenance issue.
