Compensated foundation: total or effective unit weight?

Compensated foundation: total or effective unit weight?

Hi all,
I am analyzing a compensated foundation and I have this question:
When calculating the stress of the soil to be excavated, should I use the total unit weight or effective unit weight?
The data I have is:

from 0 to 2 m depth, a granular fill
from 2 to 10 m depth, soft clay.
GWL is at 2.00 m. depth
Excavation will be around 6 to 7 meters depth.

I attach the equation and part of a book.

RE: Compensated foundation: total or effective unit weight?

For soils above groundwater level, use total; for soils under groundwater level use effective.
