Wikipedia on PDM

According to the Talk section of this Wiki article, it reads like an advertisement. I agree. I posted proposing that I start a discussion about this in an engineering forum, and use it as a reference. As of today, no one has told me not to. A well written article on PDM will be useful. People on Eng-Tips are intelligent professionals, so our opinions should count for something.

What is PDM? What is it for and what should it do?

What is PLM for that matter?

RE: Wikepedia: Product Data Management

Product Document Management = PDM as I first learnt of it, however with ever increasing use of digital data I can see substituting 'data' for 'document'.

Product Life Cycle Management = PLM

PDM tends to concentrate on managing just the 'data', where as 'PLM' starts moving into also handling business processes.

PLM can tend to overlap with ERP so you sometimes have to decide which system handles what.

KENAT,

The last time I looked carefully, the Wikipedia page was claiming that PDM helped control the warehouse. I found that a remarkable concept. I would expect that the warehouse would be controlled by accounting, given that anything that moves in or out of it is a financial transaction that they must account for.

RE: Wikepedia: Product Data Management

Sorry to self promote, but I wrote an article on this general topic a while ago.

I mainly want to point you to an image within the article that is originally from PLM Technology Guide.
They have another good image of systems overlap and usage during certain phases of the product lifecycle which you can find on their website.
