Minimum distance between bevel welds?

Minimum distance between bevel welds?

Minimum distance between bevel welds?

(OP)
Does any structural code provide any guidance on the minimum distance between full-pen welds? I didn't find anything in AISC 325-10.

We placing 1/4" thick A36 plate over existing 3/16" thick A36 plate. Both have full-pen vertical welds and obviously we don't want them to overlap. I'm trying to determine the minimum distance these welds must be from each other given that the weld in the new plate will engage the existing 3/16" plate.

RE: Minimum distance between bevel welds?

With relatively thin material such as this, I would not be too concerned with it; however, if you want to be sure of little or no influence, separate the welds by twice the width of the heat affected zone for the first weld. For a 3/16" plate, I would expect the HAZ to be about 1/2" wide on each side of the joint.

Thank you Ron
