seal plan change

Hi all,

I am facing 1 issue regarding seal plan change. My issue is - I have 1 pump having service slop oil ( properties are below) in that pump I have only 53a seal plan. Water is used In this plan. Now I have to shift that pump At new location having new service - LSD liquid (properties are below). Now at new location water is not available so I can not use 53a seal plan. So please suggest can I use seal plan 11 and 76.??? If yes then why ? And if no than suggest any other seal plan in which water is not use.

Slop oil - Lsd liquid
Temp - 51 normal - 50 normal
Sp gr - 0.8539@ 51 degree c.- 1.012 @ 50degree c.
Vapor pressure- 0.63. - 0.13
Viscosity - 1.24 cp - 0.55 cp
Capacity- 5- rated. - 8.5 rated
Discharge pressure- 7.48. - 7.99
Suction pressure-2.66 max - 1.39 max

Existing pump having Arrangement 2 , 3CW-BB - 53A KN

Please suggest.

Thanks in advance.

RE: seal plan change

Can you replace the cooling coils with an air cooler and small fan? Depending on the heat load, a plan 53B or 53C might be possible.

Is this new fluid susceptible to setting up or freezing at ambient temperatures?

RE: seal plan change

Thank you very much for your reply... yes we can replace it with air cooler.

Sir, but i have 1 query regarding with solution. here my temp. is 50 degree. and if i try to cool by air then my air temp will be near around 38 or 40 degree. (Atm.) So is this temp. is sufficient to cool 50 degree.???

Thanks in advance.

RE: seal plan change

Talk to your seal vendor. 10C approach would be pushing it in my opinion. Maybe you can allow the reservoir to run at a higher temperature giving you a greater temperature difference.

RE: seal plan change

Thank you sir...

RE: seal plan change

1. You can go for Natural Draft Air Cooler.

2. Since Temperature is only 50 deg C, Barrier fluid temperature may not go above 70 deg C. if it is acceptable to you , it is not necessary to go for barrier fluid cooling.
3. Plan 76 is normally recommended for volatile liquid, therefore it should not be used in this case.

RE: seal plan change

plan 53A is a dual pressurised seal. Are you pressurising the barrier? what are the units for pressure? what is the shaft size? it looks like you can just run Plan 53A with water and it should just need topping up once per month so you do not need water near the plan 53A vessel, use a portable hand pump to top up. This application looks like you can use a single seal with 2 hard faces and external spring. you will probably get away with Plan 02, however Plan 11 will assist better in cooling. send a drawing of what you have and i may give you more information
