Stabbed to Death

Stabbed to Death

(OP)
Nothing to do with engineering so feel free mark for deletion if you think it is not suitable.

In the UK, for some reason, the news readers love using stabbed to death instead of died from a stab wound. It conjures up different images. One is a maniac stabbing people until they die like in the movie psycho and the other is someone just stabbing the victim once.

Just wondering - what phrases do other English speaking countries use to describe stabbings.

RE: Stabbed to Death

I see them both here in the US. You're right, they do conjure up different images. I also see "stabbed to death" as gory with death at the scene of the crime, while "died from a stab wound" evokes someone dying later in the hospital.

Same with shot to death : died from a gunshot wound.

Best to you,

Goober Dave

RE: Stabbed to Death

Was the criminal "hang by the neck until dead"?

RE: Stabbed to Death

(OP)
Should it be hanged?

That was what the sheepshank was invented for: it shortened the rope and if the victim didn't die, the executioner pulled the middle of the sheepshank to release an extra n feet of rope to, hoping the extra drop would break the victim's neck, unless they measured it incorrectly and the victim fell on the ground.

If you were convicted of treason, you were hung by the neck, and then cut down while still alive and preferably conscious. Then, you were drawn and quartered.

In that context, the "until dead" part is important.

RE: Stabbed to Death

Doesn't "to death" imply that the intention of the stabbing was death? As opposed to other non-fatal (e.g. warning, punishment) stabbings.

RE: Stabbed to Death

"The meeting of the company's latest initiative left the engineer bored to death." Has an implication of the engineer sitting in the room head limp to the back or side with drool from his mouth. Where as "After the company meeting on the latest initiative, the engineer died" is not as horrific.

RE: Stabbed to Death

A very quick look on the net - stabbed to death - seems pretty well universal and common usage.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

RE: Stabbed to Death

"Death by bunga" also springs to mind surprise

RE: Stabbed to Death

Or "shoot to kill" as opposed to friendly kinds of shooting.

RE: Stabbed to Death

"Stabbed to death" is absolutely correct. there is nothing wrong with it. Whether Britain or USA, it will be accepted everywhere equally.

RE: Stabbed to Death

Why is there death by "friendly fire" and not death by "friendly stabbing"?

RE: Stabbed to Death

Stabbed to death with many panes.

Not a lot of stabbing goes on in the military these days. Caesar mentions in his account of his wars in Gaul that he had his troops rip off their left sleeves, for identification. A Roman gladius was something like eighteen inches long, and they were goofing up. And we expect drone operators not to.

RE: Stabbed to Death

The one I like is "electrocuted to death" or "death by electrocution". The word "electrocution" is itself a contraction of "execution by electricity" or "electro execution". Last I heard, execution was a fatal condition. So saying "death by electrocution" is like saying death by death by electricity.

I guess it's something the journalists learn at the School of Redundancy and Repetition Institute .

So if someone electrocuted himself accidentally i.e. he executed himself by electricity accidentally i.e. he committed suicide accidentally?
