AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

I am planning to take AWS-CWI seminar and exam within next 2-3 months since I am interested in welding inspection. I have worked in the same field before. I need to study before attending the seminar especially for Part A and B(fundamentals and Practical) of the exam which may not be fully covered in 2 weeks' seminar. Can someone please give me an idea on how I should prepare and what specific materials I should use? Also, what kind of questions are there in Part B? I need some guidance.
Thank you.

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

i recommend the seminar with "real educational inc" it was a two week course, i pass the test the first try

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

Hi bb29510, I am not sure if I'll be attend that one as they are located far from my location. Do you know any material that would help?

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

the test is not hard, there is just so much information. metallurgy was diffulct for me. look go to aws.org and look at the online classes,

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

I have AWS Handbook for fundamentals of welding. They have a chapter on Metallurgy. Do you think it is enough for the exam?

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

If you are truly knowlegable in welding engineering and inspection in the Code chosen, you should have no real problem in passing the test. If not, take a preperation course. Over 90% of our CWI's have taken a course and the vast majority pass it. Those who have failed mainly have had difficulty in reading.

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

1) Take the AWS CWI Seminar and
a) Highlight and Tab what the Instructor advises you will be ion the exam
b) Using the highlights/Tabs review and memorize the basics of the subject
c) Use the Highlights/Tabs to find the answer during the practice exams

2) Choose a Section each night and review/memorize what you can

3) Pay Attention to the section on Visual Inspection
a) You will be using plastic samples to ID defects/conditions and they can be/are
confusing if you have never worked with them previously.
b) If you are unfamiliar with using calipers, gauges, etc - buy/borrow a set and
practice, practice, practice.

4) Of the 3 Exams (General Knowledge, Code and Visual Inspection) the Practical can
trip you up the most, next being the 50 question closed Book exam. the 150
question Exam is easier because it is Open book and here is where your Tabbing
and High Lighting will be of use.

5) Use the D1.1 code Index! - High Light the Subject AND the Pages with the
answer...That will direct you to what you need in a minimum amount of time. Also
you ARE permitted to write additional info/locations in the Index AS LONG AS YOU
HIGHLIGHT THE WRITING! (I had a Proctor be a major A**Hole on my last Exam with
a Ex-Military kid who was taking the test for the 1st time and had not one
this...do not make this error!)

6) If you need advice/help PM me and I'll walk you thru it.. additionally a member
here (GTAW) is also a good source of AWS Test info as he is, I believe, they Gent
who taught my AWS Re-Cert course last year in Pittsburgh. (Hi Al!)

7) Do not try and cram the night before the Exam...get 8 hrs sleep and rest your
brain...you will need all the "little grey cells" during the test!

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

Wow, you had me going for a minute. It was the Proctor that was difficult, not the instructor. That's a relief.

Point of information: the Fundamentals examination, 150 questions, is closed book. It is the code book examination (Part C) that is open book and it is the code that the candidate can used a tabbed copy of the code.

The Part B examination, the Practical, is the one that separates the men from the boys.

Best regards - Al

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

yaschief and gtaw, Thank you for the detailed replies.
Yes, the 150 questions fundamental exam is a closed book. I think AWS welding handbooks should be enough to prepare for the fundamentals.
Do they send a copy of D1.1 when I register for the seminar and exam? What other materials/books can I use?

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

You get a complete set of books (not the handbooks) including the D1.1 if you sign up for the full week seminar and take the D1.1 open book examination.

Best regards - Al

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

gtaw, that's great. I called AWS and the guy told me that I wouldn't receive any books and I'll have buy them separately. But it would be nice if I get material in advance.

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

Maybe I don't understand what seminar you are taking. Generally speaking, if it is the AWS sponsored one week CWI review, the books are handed out at the beginning of the seminar. If the seminar is not through AWS (Miami), the terms and conditions could be very different.

Best regards - Al

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

part b is simply if you understand that its a fake code. forget everything that been taught and just read the part b code. the part b test is to see if you can find the correct answer from a specification or code book

part b has nothing to do with d1.1 or 1104. ITS A FAKE CODE BOOK

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

sounds weird,my first time to hear about fake codes

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

gtaw, it is a one week AWS-CWI seminar and exam. So I should receive material in advance as you said.

RE: AWS - CWI seminar and exam preparation

AWS distributes the books at the seminar. Too many problems with people forgetting to bring the materials with them when the books sent to them in advanced. When the books are handed out in class, there is no reason for anyone to show up in class without the correct books.

Best regards - Al
