when to use wave linking with "make position independent" 2

Just getting into NX8.5 and noticed in the docs that wave linking can now be "make position independent" at the time of wave linking. One question in my mind is why I would want to wave line "position independent" in the first place. We use wave linking to maintaining relationships between components.

Does anyone have an example of when wave linking position independent is useful?

While some people may consider it desirable that the default behavior is to make the WAVE-linked copy of the original geometry maintain the same spatial positioning as the parent geometry, there are others who do not want that to be the case. This may not be desirable if there's a chance that the parent geometry may have to be moved relative to it's original design orientation and you do NOT want any of the WAVE-linked objects in the other part files to be moved as well OR if in the future you may wish to move the WAVE-linked objects where they're being used. Without using the PILO (Position Independent Linked Object) option, there would be NO way to do this without having to first break the WAVE links. However, using the PILO option will allow you to move either the parent or the child and still maintain the WAVE relationship, at least all of the geometric relationships if not the positional ones.

Note that this ability to make a WAVE-linked object 'Position Independent' has always been part of NX, just that prior to NX 8.5 you had to explicitly edit an existing WAVE-linked object to get access to this option, which you can still do. What this change allows is that IF you know that this is going to be the desired situation at the time that you're creating the WAVE links, you can now set the option and save yourself having to go back and use Edit-with-Rollback to get access to the PILO option.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind though; first, once made Position Indpendent, there is no way to remove this status short of going into the edit function and relinking the WAVE object to it's original geometry. In other words, there is no simplt ON/OFF toggle that can be set/unset.

And the other considered is that you can ONLY make a WAVE-linked object Position Independent IF you actually have a 'WAVE' license, which is extra, above and beyond just having an Assembly license which is all you need to create normal WAVE-linked objects.

If any of the 'real' users out there have some actual usage cases where they've used Position Independent WAVE-linked objects, please feel free to share...
