the data is compelling!

I just don't like using singular verbs with, "Data!" It's, "The data are compelling."

Just another rant that's over. . .

RE: the data is compelling!

Honestly, that's putting way too fine a point on this. You may be technically correct, but it sounds like crap winky smile

"Data" can be used as a singular noun or a plural noun.

Here's just one take on this situation: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/is-data-singu...

thank you fel3 for the link. I read it all and found it quite interesting.

I knew from the onset that I was being nit-picky. I read so many technical publications and qualification statements that it's the presence of flaws that show they are real humans (i.e., not all boiler plate), or dolts. So, whether I correct or comment is not so much the point. I've just always been uncertain other than to follow old usage (so I've learned).

RE: the data is compelling!

I would go with "data sets" myself. Data is compelling, data sets are compelling.

RE: the data is compelling!

I think "data sets" changes the discussion. In one given analysis, you may run several different tests. Each different set of test results represents "data." The the results from all data sets were used in the analysis.

Not to ramble. . .

The stuff of which classic comedy is made. Name the show:

"Yes, we have no agendum"

"We have no agendum, today".

Not to change the subject, but the weather are crazy these days.

RE: the data is compelling!

I'm sure it's appropriate to say datums in GD&T, KENAT.2thumbsup

Is data good apple, or is data rotten apple?

Best to you,

RE: the data is compelling!

There is an anecdote about Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, who insisted that the word "news" was plural. He once sent a telegram to a correspondent, asking "Are there any news?" The correspondent wired back, "No, not a single new."

RE: the data is compelling!

One thing that has always bothered me was our Receiving Clerk was continually sending me MSDS sheets…
i.e. Material Safety Data Sheet sheets?!
