Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

My question is that I have a horizontal storage tank with one floating saddle on teflon pads. These tanks have a high cyclical load from thermal expansion so it will need to allow some flex in it. This will be in a pharmaceutical clean room with a lot of water and steam. What I need help with is designing or purchasing a "skirt" or "shroud" that will prevent water from getting under the saddle and around the bearing pad. I also don't want the water going around the anchor bolts. I can't have any microbial growth going on here and it will be too difficult to clean. Is there a company out there who can make this for me or is there an example of a design that I go reference?

I've attached an image of the tank for your reference.

Thank you.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

About setting the tank with its saddles on 6" concrete pads.

Raising that high will still not prevent steam or water to get under the saddle plate. Also, that is not an option as the architectural design of the room will not allow it.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

Why don't you make the teflon pad as big as the saddle and then the pad will fill the gap under the tank and you can clean around it.

The coefficient of friction would be too high with that size of PTFE pad. As the pressure increass the friction decrease. Sounds counter intuitive but that is the explanation that I got from the engineering firm who designed the pads. Even if we did have the same size pad as saddle I would still have to enclose it because you have to have the top element of the sliding element slightly larger than the PTFE pad to prevent plowing. That would still leave a lip for bacteria to if it is not cleaned properly.

The design is set in stone at this point. Unfortunatly. I need to come up way to prevent any water or contaminents getting under there with what I have.

Thanks.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

use several fans to blow dry it all the time.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

You could analyze a suspension system for the tank. Afterall, older firetube boilers had the steam drums filled with water supported on steel frames protected by refractory.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

Perhaps some flexible fabric clamped or glued to the saddle and clamped to the floor with some slack, all around?

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

You should talk to these guys....Sika they will for sure have a solution for you...probably a combination of their sikadur and sikaflex.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

I was thinking similar to IFR, with a rubber boot between the saddle and the footing. However as compit suggests, we use these products on expansion joints frequently and can have up to 50% compressability with some products, could be the simplest option.

IFR and EngAddict. That was my first thought was some sort of flexible rubber skirt around it. Just was not sure what type of material and the best way to attach it.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

Normally with a flange and a stainless steel backing bar on the other side. However if you go with a rubber boot or some sort of coated/impregnated canvas then there are manufactures that specifically produce these and they might be able to help you with the standard connection methods.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

(OP)
EngAddict, do you know of any manufactures? I've been looking but have not found anything yet. I'm probably not using the right search term in google.

RE: Horizontal stoarage tank saddle shroud

Probably not in your area. Try search for custom moulded rubber suppliers or canvas strips are used in ducting applications for flexible connections. Post back with your final result when you finalise the design.
