open top tank

open top tank

open top tank

(OP)
Hi all,

The designer of my waste water treatment plant is using open top tanks for neutralising the acidic water with lime. From that tank; it goes to a thickner. Is there a specific reason to use open top tanks; other than cost? We have gratings on top of the tank where operators will be doing rounds to check instruments etc.

I don't like these open top tanks.

Thanks

RE: open top tank

Cost, and the ability to view the contents.

I would use a 48-52 inch tall handrail on the catwalk, and leave it open-top. OSHA's 42-inch high handrails are too low for most US males, and the guys' center-of-gravity is above 42". The insurance folks seem to have quietly taken note of this fact -- measure a shopping mall mezz handrail.

Once again OSHA trumps reality, fact, and good engineering.

RE: open top tank

I think the open tank will have better venting and cleaning. Mixing acids and bases can produce corrosive gasses.

Thanks a lot guys for your input. I like the idea that its easier to clean and any heat of reaction can be released with ease to the atmosphere.
However, in terms of people working on top, its a drawback.
