I am a sole proprietor in New York and have a question about sales tax. I prepare and stamp plans (house plans, septic systems, subdivisions, etc.) and have been told that I do need to charge sales tax and have also been told that I don't. Can anyone confirm whether I need to charge sales tax or not in New York? Thanks.

It depends on whether professionals have to pay sales tax there. I never did, but check with whatever state agency there administers the local B&O tax. They will know. In fact, if you do have to pay, it would be listed as a line item on the B&O form for taxes.

It is state by state and often county by county. In my state, I have to collect sales tax on any work I do within the state, and they are quite cranky about getting it passed on to them in a timely manner (by the 16th of the following month you start getting a fine that goes up each day). The work I do in other states seems to have the Professional Exemption you mentioned.
