Forensic engineers and expert witnesses in various engineering fields are generally required to be licensed in their discipline as engineers.
Most experts in the geotechnical field are practicing engineers and are called upon to represent as an expert because of the their experience and reputation in geotechnical engineering, not because they call themselves an expert witness.
