RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

OP=Original post. but it could mean Operation if we were in the army.

My question is what is a PC? In this forum it is politically correct, in another forum is a P- civilian (I didn't understand) and in the Microsoft ad campaign (I am a PC and I invented windows 7) i have no idea.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while you realize that they like it

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

OP = Original Poster

PC = Personal Computer, a Wintel one, as differentiated from a Mac.

Perhaps you didn't get the "Hi I'm a Mac and this is a PC" commercials over there in OZ?

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Original post and/or poster.

The OP, in his OP ...

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

The Original Post is always by the Original poster, so I think it is a moot point or the makings of an oxymoron.

Yeah  OK it dawned on me earlier today OP = original poster.

but ...  a Wintel  one???

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Wintel = Windows + Intel

so a PC is a personal computer with an Intel processor decended from the 8086 chip or a clone such as AMD running the windows operating syste

That makes "I'm a PC" someone who chooses to use a PC rather then a Macintosh.

I learned something from that but how usefull I'm not too sure.

I always thought a PC in that usage was generic personal vs main frame.

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

For useful I charge a quarter.

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Put it on the tab.

1/4 of a $mil or 1/4 lb-o-flesh?

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Depends.  How much useful do you need?

Sounds sensible - right up until June 1982 when IBM registered "IBM Personal Computer" as a Trademark (and happily watched the world assume that the claim covered "PC" as well)

For registration in one market, see: http://www.ipo.gov.uk/domestic?domesticnum=1175927

But I do know what these are

8086 chip or a clone such as AMD
because my first was 8086 as I was waiting for Personal Computers to become powerful enough so I could be an FEA geek and my first upgrade was an AMD clone.

Come now Zeusfaber is there anything sensible about this?  For instance;

And this is part of IBM's copyright of the term "Personal Computer" as a Trademark?  It sounds like it is exactly opposite of what they were trying to do.  I guess I do not have even an ounce lawyer blood in me?

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Not moot.  The original poster may continue to make non-original posts throughout the thread, so sometimes it is correct to refer to one but not the other.  "OP" is best used in cases where either "post" or "poster" would work, but if you really mean one but not the other, don't assume that everyone else will interpret it the same way.

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

perhaps OP should be the original post, and OPP could be the originally posting party?

who's down with OPP?

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

If I was an old school rapper I'd be "down" with OPP. Just don't want to be caught with OPP.

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

Ontario Provincial Police ??

how about OP and OPer ?

RE: The abbreviation/acronym "OP" ?

I like OPer; that's unambiguously "poster".  But it would be hard going to get everyone to go along with that.
