Degaussed Pipe Becomes Magnetized After Being Cut
Degaussed Pipe Becomes Magnetized After Being Cut
(OP)
Good morning all, the following explains what we are looking for.
When we receive bare pipe from our supplier there is little or no magnetism evident and per the spec that our supplier had they supplied de-gaussed pipe. However, as soon as the pipe was trimmed to length significant magnetism was detected such that it was impossible to carry out the root weld. Subsequently a de-gaussing system was purchased by my company, this is currently being used for every joint to head weld. As we are a production facility this is not a "production" solution and we must ensure that in the future the pipe is delivered to us without this problem. We are looking for information on why the pipe is becoming magnetized after being cut to length so we can to go back to our supplier (if need be) to request changes on their end. If anyone knows any information on this situation or of any web sites that would have the information as I need to make up a report it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

RE: Degaussed Pipe Becomes Magnetized After Being Cut
Are you using any magnetic holding fixtures before/during/after cutting the pipe?
How are you detecting the magnetism after the cut?
RE: Degaussed Pipe Becomes Magnetized After Being Cut
We are NOT using any magnetic holding fixtures
We use a Gauss Meter to measure magnetism after the cut.

Alan: Suggest you search the key words pipe magnetism. The problem has been answered more or less. There are several solutions. Not an unusual experience.

AlanRich: Here is a weblink to a discussion that relates to your question:

Hope this helps.
