CADKEY to Solidworks migration

CADKEY to Solidworks migration

CADKEY to Solidworks migration

(OP)
Hi,

I am working on a project for migrating CADKEY fles to solidworks. I am using CADKEY 98.

I have some questions. Any help is highly appriciated.

1. I have 2 file types (.PRT & .CKD). I am able to open the PRT files but I am unable to open CKD files.

Questions:
1a. what is the use of each of these file types?
1b. Am I missing any modules to be using with CADKEY?

2. On opening the PRT files I can see that these are 2D drawings on the layout space. I strongly believe these are created from 3D models from the look of it. But when I try to go to model space by clicking LAYOUT and EXIT, there is no 3D model present. Instead, a new Layout dialog appears.

Questions:
2a. Where is the 3D data stored?
2b. How can I get a Iges of the 3D data?
2c. Also is there any way to identify if the model is wireframe or solid.

PS: I am a core SolidWorks user. Questions might be basic. All help is highly appreciated.

RE: CADKEY to Solidworks migration

CKD files are from the newer version, KeyCreator, and those files are not backwards compatible.  The PRT file should contain both layout and model information.  3D solid modeling was introduced with Cadkey 98 but was limited so your model may not be a solid but instead a 3D wireframe that was very common at the time.  After exiting the layout mode hit alt-A to autoscale or fit the geometry on the screen.   If it's still not visible, that level may be turned off.  It's been awhile and can't recall how to access the level screen but I think it's View/Levels/List.  You should be able to turn the levels on and off from that screen.

If you can send me the files I may be able to translate them into something you can use.  I'm not sure how to show my email address on this forum however.

RE: CADKEY to Solidworks migration

Hi,  CKD files could also be from Cadkey V20 or 21 (versions before KeyCreator).

Solidworks will import both PRT and CKD files.

It is possible that there is no 3D model associated with the 2D's in layout.  One place I worked we used to do 2D prints in layout mode (no 3D model) as it was easier to import drawing borders.

Levels can be accessed through 'View-Levels-List'.

Hope this helps.
