Take a look, 6 of these 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour are Engineering.

I'm a bit sceptical of the stuff posted here but when more than half of it's engineering, it's worth a look isn't it?

"Personal financial advisers"

I would think this people would make more money since they are the experts of how to handle money.

Well, maybe they only earn $31.79/hour but they make the most of it by wise investing, economy measures etcwinky smile.

Or maybe it's a case of not practicing what you preach/do as I say not as I do.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

Well a person has to wonder, at least for engineers, whether that's based on a nominal 40 hr work week, or an ACTUAL work week. Mine ain't 40 hrs, how about yours:)

Mike

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

Neither is mine.

And my wife is an Occupational Therapist and she makes more than me, working only 32 hours / week.  I can't believe therapists aren't listed.

(I love useless statistics like these.  They make my day reminding me how underpaid and overworked I really am, and this is the best job I've had to date.)

Government employees.  It's why we put up with the lower wages.

I'm a contractor.  I'm not _allowed_ to work overtime.

On the other hand, I get a decent rate for straight time.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

I have a nice non-governmental job that is only 40 hours per week except during major outages and I haven't had to deal with any of those yet.  Utility work has its advantages.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

Up till now most of my jobs have been 40 hours.  My current employer says we have to work until the jobs done.  And since it will never be done most of our guys work 10-12 hour days everyday.  We don't get overtime so management doesn't have to hire anyone.  Just make us work longer ;)  Except me.  I have a life and would gladly give up my job for it ;)

In the past I would get either straight time for anything over 45 hours or comp time.  But I would only ever work over 40 two or three weeks out of the year.

Automotive (and I am sure most other industries) are bad because we keep downsizing but the work load keeps going up.  I had one job that paid me in the 40's (with no overtime) that expected me to work 80 hours/week.  You can look at that as them trying to pay me 10/hour. they sure didn't mention that during the interview.  Anyways I laughed then quit shortly thereafter.

Time to get a job with a more laid back atmosphere again ;)

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

I think they forgot to mention that the personal financial advisers will need to be able to run very fast, once the retirees read over their January's 401K statistics.

If you look at Thinkjob.com webpage listings for operators, managers, and engineers associated with nuclear power plants, they are making way over $30/ hr- some listings are showing annual salaries of $190 K/ annum

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

Our graduate engineers start on more than 30 an hour (if they work a 38 hour week). Plus super.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

davefitz,
Are you aware of all the background checks and evaluations that are involved in working at a nuclear plant?
I have to believe that they are greater than that of the regular power engineers.

Also most nuclear plants are not in the most popular locations.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

Background checks should not be a problem.

If you saw a worker bee engineer job for $190k, it was probably San Onofre nuclear plant. Take a look at the cost of living before you decide if that's a good deal.

Most nuke plants are in more remote places with more reasonable costs of living.  Unfortunately, $190k is not likely unless you became a supervisor, manager, or shift supervisor qualified.

There is a nuclear renasance (sp?) in the making.  Has resulted in a big demand for engineers with nuke experience.  I haven't seen the pay scales skyrocket yet but my crystal ball says the next ten years will be very good to us.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

I am not privy to the new rules and new databases that are avaialable for background checks for these types of plants, but virtually anything a person has placed online or other "transgression" can be accessed by a prospective employer which has enhanced security concerns. Online blogs, bounced checks, late credit card or utility payments, speeding tickets, bad credit rating , etc can all be accessed and used as a criteria to bounce an employment application.

RE: 10 Jobs That Pay More Than $30 an Hour (you may be one of them)

I have nothing in my background, but I still hate the fact that they can use everything against you if they wanted to.  Especially with the ease of stealing peoples identity, your how record could be destroyed, and they WILL hold it against you.

I also hate that in my state all the police have a special scanner they can get all the background information from your license plate while you drive passed them.
