Does the installation of SolidWorks updates and service packs still require anti-virus protection to be turned off? If we still need to turn virus protection off I need written proof that I can show Corporate Office that it is required.

Our Corporate Office has set our McAfee software so we cannot turn it off ever. We have tried services.msc and msconfig to turn it off to no avail. If we still need to turn virus protection off could you teach me away to do this, our IT department says our uses cannot turn if off.
I have sent this to our VAR.

Thank you for the link. I forgot all about those on the SolidWorks site. A star for you.

"Does the installation of SolidWorks updates and service packs still require anti-virus protection to be turned off?"

I'd say this is more important that ever before these days. I make sure that not only is the AV turned off, but all of its software it is completely removed from memory during installs.

Some companies (such as my previous employer) don't allow AV to be disabled at any time, for any reason. If we disabled it, alarm bells would go off (literally) at corporate, and we could risk disciplinary action. Sometimes you just have to work with the resources and options that are available to you.

Bradley,

Does your AV run as a service? If so, you may be able to turn off the service to disable AV. Just be careful, as always. Making the wrong people upset at you can be very career-limiting. (Notice in my last post I said previous employer...)

I am watching my P’s and Q’s. I forget what that stands for. Anyway, Corporate has become dependent on Engineering since the last layoffs. If SolidWorks says we must shut McAfee off then I will push as hard as I can, “Without being fired”.
The problem I have is that I cannot prove any issue is linked too not turning off virus protection. If we install SolidWorks with virus protection is turned on. And have an issue that cannot be solved. Then my answer is “You know we installed SolidWorks while McAfee was running.

PDMAdmin,

I have tried to turn off McAfee using services.msc and Msconfig, and neither works. I am sure I am not the only company that is starting this behavior. What are the SolidWorks administrators doing to get around this issue?

Bradley,

What do you mean by "neither works"? What problems/error messages occur when you try to stop or disable the service?

At my previous employer, the SolidWorks admin (yours truly) didn't get around the issue. I had to do the installs with the AV running and hope for the best. What I personally observed was that any AV interference with the install would typically manifest itself in an obvious way, such as failing to copy some files from the CD/DVD because the AV intercepted them. That happened on occasion (more with Cosmos than SW), but not very often.

To my knowledge, we never had any hidden or intermittent performance-related issues with SW because of the AV being on during installation. To be fair, though, determining the root cause of an intermittent issue can be quite difficult. In most cases, the repeatable issues were either because of wrong video cards/drivers or software bugs.

PDMAdmin,

Thanks for you experience. A star for you.
The services for McAfee gives us: “Could not stop the McAfee McShield service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied.”
I gave Users “Full control” on the box and still got the same Error 5:
Trying Msconfig “An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.”
I could not get past the password to log in as Administrator.

Our IT director is looking into this issue also. He said he will call McAfee.

While he's in a phone calling mood, perhaps you should suggest he call SolidWorks also. McAfee (like most/all other software companies) will not readily admit a fault or shortcoming in their product. Then again SW will probably be only too willing to blame someone else. [lol]

[cheers]

I've had stability issues before that where directly related to AV running during an install. I used to think, "what does it harm to leave the AV on?". I don't think that anymore.

CorBlimeyLimey,
I sent him the phone numbers and address. Thanks for the idea.

Here is the answer that solved my McAfee turn off issues.
The head of our IT department called the corporate office to find out why they forced a lockout of turning McAfee off. Corporate said they did not require the lockout.
Our IT said fine, we will turn it back on. Somehow during our last upgrade McAfee switch to lockout mode.

I am one happy camper now. Thanks for all your help.
