Need information from ASTM A53 spec before 1957

(OP)
I think there was a 1952 edition of ASTM A53. Does anyone have a copy of this, or if there was another one between then and 1957, a copy of it. I need to know the yield strength of a schedule 40 pipe that was part of a building constructed in 1957. Thanks.

RE: Need information from ASTM A53 spec before 1957

The 5th Edition AISC Steel Manual (both 1951 and 1961 printings) notes that the load table for steel pipe columns is based on ASTM A7 steel.  The specification for A7 steel (also printed in that manual) says the minimum yield strength is 1/2 tensile strength but not less than 33000 psi.  The Tensile Strength is listed as 60000 to 72000 psi. It also notes: "if pipe is made of other steel, safe loads should be suitably modified"

Do you have some information that indicates you have "A53" steel?

RE: Need information from ASTM A53 spec before 1957

mantonas,

I hadn't noticed the earlier thread regarding this subject when I posted my previous response. It looks like you and Mike already found the reference I provided above. I did find one more piece of information from AISC Design Guide 15 (free for download for members at AISC.org).

Section 1.2 says: "The only standard referenced by AISC for steel pipe, A53, was first published in 1915. Only Grade B is included in the AISC specification."  It goes on to note that A53 has Fy=35 ksi.  So perhaps they based the tables in the 5th edition on A7, since it had a lower yield stress.

Can a sample be taken of any of the existing columns to test for yield strength?
