Analysing Laminates & Composites in Ansys Workbench


I have been tasked with analysing and optimising a laminated glass panel and was wondering if anyone new of any good reference material/tips/examples/etc for this type of work.

The product comprises two layers of glass bonded together with an adhesive and metal mounting blocks bonded to one of the layers of glass.

Can this be done from workbench or will I need to set this up in Classic?

Any advice much appreciated. Rich

I think you could be able to do this in WB, but it would be far more efficient to do this in Classical. In fact, the thin layer of adhesive between the two panels of glass is better modeled with shell elements, so you will have a mixed solid-shell formulation (solid is mainly for the mounting blocks). In Classical these things are more controllable than in WB, where afaik you would have to help yourself with some "Commands" snippets, and the effort would cancel out the benefits of the better "user-friendliness" of the GUI.
However, conceptually you could also do it in WB.

There is an excellent tutorial on composites/laminates at the customer portal (www1.ansys.com/customer) for workbench.  Just do a search for this topic.

It is probably more intuitive on ANSYS classic, but the command snippets required in AWB are not overly complex (just watch for typos).

There is an alternate method to how the tutorial presents modeling the composite using SOLID186 (or SOLID 187) elements. The end result is the same, but I believe the tutorial's method allows you to get more information about the interlaminar stresses.

After my post I found some relevant articles on FEA modelling of this problem that may be of interest to someone. Of note is the effect of temperature on the adhesive interlayer and the overall effect of a time applied load.

     I'm sorry, those  particular tutorials are not available elsewhere. A google search for ANSYS workbench tutorials will pull up several. Additionally, workbench ships with some tutorials. If you have a legitamite copy of ANSYS then there's no reason your customer number should not be active. Try contacting customer support.
