We are currently receiving gages, primarily thread gages, that come from the Manufacturer without a calibration certificate. They do include a certificate of compliance to NIST standards.
Our internal calibration department claims that certificate of compliance is not enough. They state that a certificate of calibration with data from the unit is required.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Is this a requirement of specs like ISO 17025 or ANSI Z540-1?

Since you are purchasing these gages without actual certification, you should send them out to get individual gages certified and then make sure future POs include the indivual certification which will cost a few more $$$.

You may also consider obtaining customer Quality program information - ISO 9000:2000 program certification record, Quality program manual. You can also perform a sample inpection of a few gauges to determine how closely they match their published specification, before launching into this expensive option of re-verification - otherwise what all these ISO 9001 certifications and six sigma programs are good for.

Why can't your calibration department perform this calibration for you? You do want actual results in order to track gage wear to anticipate when your go and no-go members will wear out so you can replace them before they go out of spec and leave you with a heap of suspect product.

We are going to verify the gages at regular intervals and track wear of the gages (within the uncertainty of our measurement capabilities).
We are also shortening the calibration intervals so that we can track the before and after data and determine an appropriate calibration/replacement interval.
