Hey, does anyone know of any alphanumeric displays (something like 16 characters by 2 lines) that will operate from -40C to +85C?  

I've looked at LCDs, but the widest range that I've found will go -20C to +70C.  That's too bad, because I like their characteristics otherwise (low power, readable in direct sunlight).

I suppose that I could use a character LED module and turn off the display when I'm not using it.  But, if anyone knows of some other types of displays that I should research, I'd like to know about it.

I think you are stuck with <urp> LEDs.

It's quite common to heat LCDs at low temperature. Minco makes a transparent heater that is self regulating. Or you can use a low cost thermostat to turn on the heater at low temperatures. National LM26 is a good choice. I've also used 1 watt surface mount resistors as a heater mounted underneath the glass.
