does anyone know how you go about calculating the diameter of a ground station dish required to deliver 1pW to th receiver.
 
I think this would depend on where your receiver is located, the gain of the receiving antenna, and the transmission losses.

 
you also would need to know the transmitter power output and its antenna gain.
 
Path loss is also a function of frequency, so you need to know that. I assume this is a microwave signal.
