I go to Universtiy of Dayton and am working on a project for senior design. We have a mixer using a variable frequency drive that trips some GFCI's once it is turned on. We have looked into ferrite loops and issolation transformers. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't really get what your doing... Mind giving more details?

The high frequencies inherent in VFDs capacitively couple with other lines and into local grounds more easily than straight 60Hz, often causing these problems. They also have rectifier front ends that can draw power in pulses that, again, can cause false tripping.
