Oh Dear(tm).

That makes one less company making 8051s then...

Which is unfortunate if you happen to have designed in something that no one else makes... :o(

RE: Intel issues end of life notices.

Given that the 8051 is over 25 yrs old, it's had a pretty good run.

I liked the 8051 even after Intel's notoriously twisted and ridiculous marketing hype.  I never much liked any of the others even though I used them.

RE: Intel issues end of life notices.

The 8051 is dead - long live the 8051.

Although Intel, the creator of the 8051 may discontinue production, it lives on in many other places. 8051 cores are everywhere! Strange for a uP that has a non-orthonogal register arrangement causing early C-compilers much trouble in creating efficient code. The 8051 core, or cores that use the 8051 instruction set, are easily available IP that are incorporated in all sorts of semi-custom designs. Even Chipcon's recently announced ZigBee-on-a-chip has a 8051 based core.

Yeah Comcokid.  "The 8051 is dead - long live the 8051"  Well put.

Maybe better though, "The 8051 is dead - long live the XX80CXXXXX"

Maxim sucked up Dallas and now sells the DS80C320 series which is a kick-butt 8051; 33MHz, 4 clocks/cycle instead of 12.
