Code Case for Cast Version of F92
Code Case for Cast Version of F92
(OP)
Does anyone know if the is an active or pending code case in ASME, ASTM, or ANSI for pressure tempurature tables for a cast version of ASTM a 182 F92 for use in valve body castings per B16.34?
Thanks,
Thanks,

RE: Code Case for Cast Version of F92
Sorry for my ignorance, but could there be a code case with ASTM or B16.34, or would it always start with the B&PV Code?
Also, what does it take to get a code case started if there is not already one?
Thanks again,

Before you go any further, I would suggest you review ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II, Introduction and the Mandatory Appendix 5 for Approval of New Material.

For pending changes by the ASTM work committee for a particular standard, go to www.astm.org, enter the standard such as A182 & search, then click on 'Active Standard.' Click 'Related work' and for A182/A182M-05a you can find pending actions, e.g.:
WK9353 -- "Addition of UNS S32906 (F XX) to A182. The grade is already covered in ASTM A789, A790, A479, A240, A480, and ASME Code Case 2295-2."
Also, before clicking on 'Active Standard,' you can find changes to previous standards, e.g.,
WK6338 -- "ASME has requested the addition of UNS S32615 to A182. The grade is already covered by A213 and ASME Code Case 2029-3."
This was a proposed change to A182/A182M-04a which is no longer listed as pending, so I presume it's in A182/A182M-05a.

Sorry, but I don't believe your statement below is entirely correct. Can’t speak for ASTM but I can for ASME B&PV Code. ASME B&PV Code will not endorse any new material for use under a Code Case unless it is supplied under a current material specification, like ASTM or recognized international material specification. So, before you can obtain a Code Case, ASTM or other international standard must assign this material to an existing specification or generate a new specification. (Re; Nonmandatory Appendix 5 in the ASME B&PV Code, Section II, Part D)
"ASTM doesn't have Code Cases (or anything similar to my knowledge). It will make changes to standards, such as additional alloys covered, based upon ASME Code Cases."
RE: Code Case for Cast Version of F92
I believe the original poster was looking for a cast, not forged specification, for Grade 92 material. This would most likely fall under ASME SA 217 (perhaps some day). I know that I have not seen any Code Case for a cast version of Grade 92 come across ASME C&S.
RE: Code Case for Cast Version of F92
I don't see a reason for disagreement. My examples were to illustrate finding pending & prior changes to ASTM specs.
In both, an ASME Code Case suggest that an ASTM spec. material (A789, etc. and A213) satisfies the requirements of another ASTM spec. (A182) as well. Nothing about casting.
The spec. title itself is a bit curious --
A182/A182M-05a Standard Specification for Forged or Rolled Alloy-Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and Parts for High-Temperature Service
-- it doesn't state that valves & parts are to be forged or wrought, so understandable that someone might consider cast valve bodies. Removing the first 'and' would make forging explicit.
RE: Code Case for Cast Version of F92
Is the cast form considered a new material by ASTM or ASME?
Thanks again,

I would follow kenvlach's advice in his previous post. Go the ASTM web site below. I did this myself, and found thru various links on the web site below the FAQ.

Questions like new standards development are answered with good information. In either case, you would need to submit a request in writing to the specific committee that handles ferrous castings and request that Grade 92 material in cast form be considered.
Once ASTM recognizes and assigns a UNS designation for the cast material, you can approach ASME Section II and request a Code Case for eventual inclusion in the ASME B&PV Code.
