Is it possible to change the colour of an autoshape or fill of an autoshape, depending upon the value in another cell?
 
yes, but with limitations, which are:

1) accomplished using vba code.
2) value in cell is a valid color.

unfortunately, just as I suspected.
 
You could always use Select Case in your macro - you can then use any values to set any colours
