Is anyone aware of composite molding compounds which are inherently intumescent, that is, in the presence of a fire form a protective char layer insulating the base material ?

Here's a few of the products that we typically specify for building construction.  These are all manufacturers of intumescent putty pads, usually installed at electrical boxes and cable penetrations.  Hope this helps.

There is a company called Technical Fiber Products in New York (a division of a British firm) that sells intumescent panels that can be used in composites products. Their web site is www.techfibres.com.
