As far as I am aware, the 2004 edition of the ASME BPV Codes were applicable as of 1 January 2004. A friend of mine says that he read somewhere the the 2004 edition only becomes effective from March 2004. Can anyone confirm this ?

Thanks

The 2004 Edition of the ASME B&PV code was late in being published last year. From what I remember, the effective date was March, 2004.

johnntmist2003,

The 2004 code, and any revisions, become mandatory 6 months after the publication date (see Summary of Changes page). Either the 2001 Edition through the 2003 Addenda or the 2004 Edition can be used during this 6 month period.

The date of issuance for the 2004 edition was July 1, 2004 (on the inside page my copy) and I wasn't even able to get mine until mid-September from Global Engineering Documents.

I hope this helped some.

Thanks all for the assistance. By the way, in my original post, I meant to say 2005, not 2004. I checked on the National Board web site and could not find any posting in this regard, maybe it has been removed.

Regards

Note the reference to the contract date. If the work is CONTRACTED FOR before the date the new edition becomes applicable the work may be done to the prior Edition / Addenda.

the contract date is so misunderstood that some AIs will not buy it,
I think that if you started a job before the new edition becomes effective is a better cause to use the older Code.
starting the job mean as a minimum some fabrication documentation with dates presented to the AI on time.

GenB, I see your point but it is widespread practice around here, gnerally using the P.O. date.

We even get additional work added to a previous P.O. (still open) to design under the previous Ed. /Add.

The A.I. has no problem, but for sure you should do what YOUR A.I. will buy!
