I was speaking with a safety valve salesman today who indicated that the current 15 PSIG threshold for boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping being considered "high pressure" is going to be reduced to 10 PSIG next year. Any truth to this?

Paragraph U-1(c)(2) in the new 2004 Edition of ASME Section VIII Division 1 addresses the "scope" of this Code. Subparagraph (h) continues to exempt from this scope vessels with internal or external operating pressures less than 15 psi. Don't have any word on boilers or piping.

This has been a Code exception for as long as I can remember. I doubt this will ever change. The exemption is 15 psi and less by the way.

TBP,

Many "technical salesmen" I have encountered seem to have no formal technical education...(lots of ex-teachers, ex-military and ex-used car salesmen.)

Anyway, I would find such a change astonishing considering all of the state/federal/corporate regulatory guides and practices that are built upon the 15 psig threshold...

My opinion only....

MJC - A large number are exactly as you describe, far more marketing capability than application information. There are some, however, who have an excellent knowledge of their products & applications, and are very "plugged in" to what's going on. Apparently, the guy I was speaking to isn't one of them :)
